Discovering the True Value and Impact of Being a Nanny
(Disclosure: The views expressed in this blog post are not necessarily shared by the Experienced Nanny)
We often encounter misconceptions and belittlement surrounding the role of a nanny. Recently, a comment on Twitter caught my attention, claiming that nannying is hardly a real job. As an experienced nanny, this struck a chord, igniting a desire to address this misunderstanding. So, let's delve into my journey and the valuable lessons I've learned.

Breaking Free from Stereotypes and Judgment
In the past, I hesitated to reveal my profession when asked. I felt compelled to disguise it, using fancy words on my resume to downplay that I am "just a nanny." But I've realized that by allowing others to determine the importance of my job, I'm enabling mockery and belittlement. It's time to change that perspective.
The Hidden Rewards and Perks of Being a Nanny
First and foremost, being a nanny is not primarily about the money. However, acknowledging that our pay often exceeds the average wage is worth acknowledging. But beyond financial compensation, there are countless reasons why this job is the best one I've ever had.
Personal Growth and Maturity
Nannying has propelled me to grow and mature in ways I never anticipated. Initially, I thought anyone could do this job, but I quickly realized that being a good nanny requires unique qualities and skills. I pushed myself to learn, research, and improve continuously. Today, I can confidently say that I excel as a professional nanny.
Dedication and Hard Work
I committed myself to hard work to gain respect and reach the desired professionalism. I immersed myself in books, documentaries, and research while gaining experience working for multiple families simultaneously. Crafting creative crafts and mastering sleep and potty training techniques – I became an exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable nanny.
Tolerance and Acceptance
Working closely with various families and witnessing diverse parenting styles has taught me the value of tolerance and acceptance. I've understood that every parent has their approach, and we are all doing our best. By sharing opinions and engaging in constructive conversations, we can learn from one another and strive to become better parents and caregivers.
Rediscovering the Joy of Simplicity
Being a nanny has reconnected me with my inner child. Amidst the pressure of adulthood, we often forget the simple joys of life. But blowing bubbles, building forts, and indulging in childlike happiness can instantly brighten our lives and the lives of the children in our care.
Maturing Relationships
Through my work, I've had the opportunity to witness different long-term relationships and marriages. This exposure has provided invaluable insights into the dynamics of successful partnerships. I now have a deeper understanding of what makes a healthy and fulfilling relationship, which will benefit me in my future endeavors.
Preparation for Parenthood
While being a nanny does not equate to being a parent, it has granted me a glimpse into the world of parenting. I've changed countless diapers, comforted children, and tackled messy situations that most parents encounter. This experience has undoubtedly given me an advantage and a sense of preparation for my future as a parent.
The Power of Dressing Up
Wearing yoga pants and being covered in baby puke all day makes those rare opportunities to dress up even more special. Putting on makeup, slipping into a beautiful dress, and donning high heels suddenly become a transformative experience that brings me immense joy.
Greater Awareness on the Road
As a nanny, I've become acutely aware of the responsibilities that come with driving with children in the car. I've learned to prioritize their safety above all else, often glancing at them rather than focusing solely on the road. Seeing "baby on board" stickers on other cars serves as a reminder to be extra cautious and attentive.
Embracing the Proud and Unapologetic Nanny
Being a nanny has shaped me in profound ways. Despite facing mockery, disrespect, and being undervalued, I am proud to be a nanny.
